What is National Girlfriends Day?
National Girlfriends Day is a day to celebrate the special friendship between girls.
This can be between sisters, moms, classmates, or co-workers.
Girlfriends are often our closest friends.
They spend time together, laugh, talk, and share secrets.
They are there for each other in both good and tough times.
Where did the word “girlfriend” come from?
The word “girlfriend” was first used in 1859.
At first, it meant just a female friend.
Later, in the 1920s, “dating” became popular.
So “girlfriend” also started to mean a romantic partner.
Even today, it can mean either a close girl friend or a romantic partner.
Who started National Girlfriends Day?
It was created in 2006 by Allie Savarino Kline and Sally Rodgers.
They also had a website called Sisterwoman.com, but it no longer exists.
How can you celebrate?
Tell your girlfriends how much they mean to you.
Spend time with them—go for lunch, a walk, or have a drink.
If you can’t meet, send a message or post online.
If you have a romantic girlfriend, celebrate your relationship too.
But also let her enjoy time with her own girlfriends.
